Long-term Care Quality
One of the reasons this proved to be a strong nursing home is that it earned a very impressive long-term care score. In fact, long-term care was its best category. In that area, we awarded this nursing home an A-. For long-term care residents, the primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. Once we looked at the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 93.06358 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which happens to be a few points less than we expected but still a respectable figure. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.65 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we graded this facility so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing score. Nursing turned out to be its second best category grade. In that category, we awarded this facility a grade of B+. There are a host of subcategories within this grade. Many of the datapoints are tied to levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home offers extremely high levels of nursing care, averaging 4.2 hours per patient each day. This is more nursing care than nearly any other nursing home offers. Finally, this facility also performed well in several of the quality measures we assessed. By way of illustration, in terms of the number of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, this place performed better than the national average. This is generally an indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls. Pressure ulcers can many times be avoided with better nursing care and having a policy of regularly turning residents to avoid bed sores.
Short-term Care Quality
Turning to an additional strength for this facility, we awarded them one of our more favorable scores in our short-term care category as well, with a grade of B+. In our short-term care grade, we strive to forge a valuable measure for rehabilitation. In this process, we look at the facility's levels of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. One of this nursing home's strengths is registered nurse hours. We found that it offers more care from registered nurses to its residents than most facilities. The final measure we assessed in this category is the percentage of residents that returned home from the facility. We found that it performed respectably with 46.7 percent of its patients returning home.
Facility Inspections
Moving on to our inspection category, it appears this nursing home has earned quality government inspections in recent years as well. We gave it a B in this area. These inspection grades take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This particular nursing home received 5 deficiencies on its inspection report. Overall, this is still a good inspection report, but we'd always recommend looking into any deficiencies you find troubling.
