Nurse Quality

Grade: A-minus

One of the reasons this place received a great overall grade is that it received a very impressive nursing rating. Nursing actually turned out to be its best category. In that category, we awarded this nursing home an A-. When calculating a facility's nursing grade, we weigh the quantity of hours nurses are caring for residents as well as the level of skill of those nurses. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also looked at some nursing quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. This facility performed very well in terms of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We consider these areas to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

This facility also was awarded an impressive long-term care score. Indeed, we awarded it an above average score of B+ in this category. When nursing homes receive this type of grade in this category it is typically a good sign for patient care and indicates that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses and aids. On top of looking at the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is much higher than the majority of nursing homes. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0.03 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Facility Inspections

Another area of strength for this facility is in inspections. In fact, inspections turned out to be one of its best categories. In that category, we awarded this facility a B. Inspection ratings weigh several factors found on a nursing home's inspection reports. One key criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher scores in this category generally have very few severe deficiencies. Fortunately, although this nursing home had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G through L. This tells you the inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. We should note that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in the industry.

The next area we analyzed is short-term care, in which this facility was awarded a B. This nursing home didn't turn out to have any real weaknesses. In determining our short-term care ratings, we look at a facility's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. This area is more often than not a solid assessment of the facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like this nursing home submitted information about its staffing of registered nurses or physical therapists.
