While we were not very complementary of this facility's overall grade, it actually received an A- in the area of nursing. Nursing scores are based in large part on quantity of nursing care available. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home the country in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as by employing a protocol of turning patients more frequently.

Sadly, this facility only earned a grade of D for its long-term care rating, which happens to be one of its more favorable category grades. In a long-term care environment, the nursing home's primary goal is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. After looking at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is more than the vast majority of nursing homes. To our surprise, this facility also keeps its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Sadly, some of its other scores in this category were not as favorable as these.

Sadly, this facility received a grade of just D in our inspection category. This is well below average grade. Our inspection ratings weigh many items found on the facility's recent inspection reports. When you see too many deficiencies on the reports, this is typically the worst sign. Severe deficiencies indicate a threat to the well being of residents. This particular facility was hit with 2 deficiencies by government inspectors. The only favorable thing we found is that none of its deficiencies were in the categories that suggest they posed a risk to patient health or safety. Finally, we also want to point out that this facility was assessed significant government fines amounting to more than $100,000. This often indicates that a poor track record spanned several years.

Switching gears to our next category, we gave this nursing home a D in the area of short-term care. This is the nursing home's least impressive category score. With our short-term care rating, we endeavor to craft a valuable gauge for rehabilitation services. In doing so, we analyze the nursing home's scope of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. Considering its weak rating in this area, we were not surprised to learn this facility provides far fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most nursing homes. The final measure we assessed in this area is the number of residents who who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. This facility struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 3.3 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, this was quite a bit below the national average.
