Facility Inspections
In addition to performing well in its overall grade, this nursing home performed at an even higher level in the area of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A+. Inspection scores are based on datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that excel in this area tend to have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these facilities generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. This facility was hit with 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered severe. This means that the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies to create an immediate threat to patient health or safety. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.
Short-term Care Quality
We also gave this facility a score of A for our short-term care score. In calculating our short-term care ratings, we look at a facility's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other types of therapists. This grade is considered to be a fair assessment of a facility's rehabilitation services. When we assessed this facility's nursing hours, we found it offered more care from registered nurses than most nursing homes. The final metric we assessed in this area is the number of residents who returned home from the nursing home. It fared as well as just about any nursing home in Indiana in this metric with 67.2 percent of its patients returning home. For most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term patients return home.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home's next best category was nursing. We awarded it a grade of B- in this category. While this wasn't quite as good as some of its other category grades, this isn't a bad score either. Our nursing grade assesses the facility's level of nurse staffing. We weigh both the levels of skill of those nurses and the amount of time spent with residents. This nursing home provides an impressive 4.1 hours of nursing care per resident each day. This is a higher quantity of nursing than what is provided by most places. Finally, we also baked a few quality-based metrics into our nursing grades. This place was relatively weak in two of the major areas we looked at, with below average scores for minimizing its patients' major falls and pressure ulcers. These datapoints are usually reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care offered.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home's weakest category is long-term care, which is the final area we analyzed. It received an F for this area. In spite of multiple strong grades in other categories, this grade is nevertheless a bit of a concern so we felt obligated to make sure you are aware. For prospective residents seeking a permanent residence as opposed to skilled nursing, long-term care grades are an important measure. On top of providing favorable levels of nursing care and other staffing, this facility gave the pneumonia vaccine to 97.41936 percent of its patients. These scores were clearly more impressive than a few of its other data points in the category. Surprisingly, this nursing home was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had just 1.53 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in this category were not as favorable as these.
