On top of having a decent overall rating, we also wanted to point out that this nursing home earned favorable health inspections in recent years. We awarded them one of our better scores in this category, with a B+. This is a much better score than the facility's overall score. Inspection scores are based on items located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that excel in this area have very few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. While this facility had some minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G through L. This tells you the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A few minor deficiencies shouldn't stop you from considering a nursing home.

Additionally, we awarded this facility a grade of B+ in our short-term care category. This happens to be one of our higher scores. Our short-term care grade is often employed to assess a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. To provide high-end rehabilitation services, facilities generally must have better levels of skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other types of therapists. We were not able to find information about this nursing home's registered nurse or physical therapy staffing. The final datapoint we looked at in this area is the number of patients who were able to return home from the facility. We found that 6 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home as opposed to remaining at the facility on a permanent basis.

This facility received its third best category grade in the area of long-term care. We awarded this nursing home a grade of B- in this category, which is a respectable grade. For patients in need of a permanent residence rather than rehabilitation, long-term care grades are very important. In addition to looking at the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 98.773 percent of its residents, which is better than most nursing homes. This facility keeps its patients out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

The next category we scored was nursing. We gave it an F in this category, which is a bottom of the barrel score. This is certainly a significant disappointment. When determining our nursing scores, we assess both nursing hours and the skill levels of those nurses. This facility averaged only 0.4 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. To go along with its subpar totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this nursing home also didn't fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing grades. We looked at the percent of patients experiencing major falls and pressure ulcers. This place had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average facility. This could be a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. These statistics pulled down this nursing home's nursing rating quite a bit.
