Facility Inspections

Grade: B-minus

While we graded this facility incredibly poorly overall, it received a fairly respectable inspection report this year. As a result, it received a decent grade in that category with a score of B-. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating our inspection grades. One key factor is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some end up being quite minor. While this nursing home had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you the government inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, CMS cited this nursing home for possible abuse or neglect. Hopefully, its performance improves in the future, but until then we simply can't recommend this facility.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

We were also surprised to find that this facility received a decent nursing grade this year. We gave it a grade of C in that category. Our nursing rating weighs several datapoints, but the most important consideration is the number of nurse hours spent with patients. This facility averages 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is not an impressive total. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics. Although this nursing home got docked a bit for nursing hours per resident, it excelled in some of these quality-based metrics. With fewer than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it did well in this area. This is typically a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as by having a system of moving a patient even once per day.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: D

Sadly, this facility's next best score was long-term care. However, with a D in this area, it still fared somewhat badly. When facilities receive this kind of score in this category it is typically a bad sign for resident care and it may indicate that the nursing home is not as well-staffed. One of the statistics we considered after nursing hours was vaccinations. Candidly, we were a bit concerned this nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccination to just 77.111115 percent of its patients. To our surprise, this nursing home was actually able to limit hospitalizations. With only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home had fewer hospitalizations than most nursing homes. This is its best feature in this category.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: F

Moving on to our final area, this nursing home didn't fare very well in this category either. With an abysmal grade of F in short-term care, this is really as bad as it gets. Our short-term care grades are vital for people seeking rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually mandates more skilled nursing. This means a vast range of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. Considering its abysmal score in this category, we weren't shocked to find this nursing home offered substantially fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most nursing homes. Lastly, we assessed the number of patients that ultimately were able to return home from this facility. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 4.3 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit off the national average.
