Facility Inspections
To pair with its strong overall performance, we awarded this nursing home an A for our inspections rating. Perhaps the most critical factor we look at in determining our inspection ratings is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. Places with better grades in this area most likely avoided the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. This nursing home was assessed 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This means that the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies an imminent risk to resident safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Among the reasons we rated this facility so highly is that it was awarded a favorable long-term care grade. In fact, long-term care is its second highest category score. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of A-. Facilities that do well in long-term care tend to be well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to residents. One of the criteria we considered on top of nursing hours was vaccines. This nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 97.708336 percent of its residents. Vaccination is a proven method to avoid unnecessary deaths for the nursing home population. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.59 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home has fewer hospitalizations than many nursing homes.
Short-term Care Quality
Turning to another strength for this nursing home, we gave them one of our stronger scores in our short-term care category as well, with a B+. Our short-term care ratings are based on a nursing home's quantity of skilled highly skilled professionals. This means a broad spectrum of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other types of therapy. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. This nursing home performed much better in the final datapoint we looked at in this category, which was the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. It fared as well as just about any nursing home in Massachusetts in this area with 60.7 percent of its patients returning home.
Nurse Quality
The next category we assessed is nursing. In this area, we awarded this facility a decent grade of B-. This proved to be this nursing home's weakest category. When calculating our nursing scores, we weigh both nursing hours and the levels of licensure of those nurses. This nursing home provides 3 hours of nursing care per resident each day. This is a much lower figure than we were hoping for. Lastly, we like to look at quality-based metrics, such as the percent of patients who experienced pressure ulcers and major falls. Sometimes these statistics are decent indicators of the quality of nursing care.
