One of the reasons this place is a strong nursing home is that it earned an impressive inspection score. Inspections is its best category. In that area, we gave this facility an A. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing these inspection grades. One critical factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies can be relatively minor. While this place had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are found in categories G through L. This tells you CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple relatively minor dings aren't something to panic about.

This facility fared well in our short-term care category. As a result, we awarded it a grade of A for that category, which turns out to be one of our most impressive grades. In determining our short-term care scores, we look at a facility's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other types of therapists. This category is frequently a useful assessment of the facility's rehabilitation. This nursing home provides more services with physical therapists and registered nurses than most facilities we looked at. This is definitely a great sign. The final statistic we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients who ultimately returned home from the nursing home. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in Ohio in this area with 64.2 percent of its residents returning home. At most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.

Another one of this facility's impressive category grades came in the area of nursing care. We awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of B. We weighed the licensure of nurses working for the nursing home, in addition to the number of hours the nurses were with patients, in determining our rating in this area. This nursing home provides 3.9 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This is better than what is offered by most facilities. Finally, this place also performed well in several of the quality measures we assessed. For example, in terms of the percentage of its patients sustaining falls which lead to major injury, this place performed as well as any facility in Ohio. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can typically be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

Turning to the last area, this nursing home did not perform very well. With a bottom of the barrel grade of F in that category, this was obviously this nursing home's poorest grade. For prospective patients looking for a permanent place to live rather than skilled nursing, long-term care is an important category. With a long-term care grade in this range, we were surprised to learn that this facility performed relatively well in both nursing hours and its vaccination records. In fact, this nursing home gave the pneumonia vaccine to 99.484535 percent of its residents. This statistic is higher than the average nursing home. Surprisingly, this nursing home was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had just 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Sadly, a few of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.
