Long-term Care Quality
One of the main reasons this turned out to be a strong facility is that it received a very impressive long-term care grade. In fact, long-term care was its best grade. In that area, we gave this facility an A. Long-term care ratings of this caliber generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. After we finished looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses, we turned to the facility's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is very impressive. Pneumonia is often a life or death ailment for nursing home residents so we like it when a nursing home doesn't take any chances. This facility also keeps its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 1.1 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a significantly better hospitalization rate than most nursing homes.
Facility Inspections
In addition, this facility also excelled in the area of inspections, where it received a grade of A-. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. Inspection scores account for a host of factors included in a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher scores in this category tend to have few severe deficiencies. This place was assessed 6 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe. This tells you that the inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies to be an immediate risk to resident health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Nurse Quality
This nursing home also received a strong nursing score. In fact, we awarded it an above average grade of B+ in this area. We analyzed the skill-level of nurses at the nursing home, as well as the quantity of hours the nurses were with patients, in calculating our grade in this category. This nursing home provides 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the state in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can typically be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as employing a policy of moving a resident more frequently.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home's weakest area is short-term care, which is the last area we looked at. In this area, we awarded this facility a grade of just D. We wanted to point out this possible weak spot, however, you shouldn't over-emphasize a single bad category either. Short-term care grades are often employed to score a facility's performance with rehabilitation. To offer highly rated rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to provide better levels of skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. In this nursing home's case, we found that it provides less physical therapist hours per resident than the average facility. The last measure we considered in this category is the percentage of patients that ultimately returned home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this area, with just 20.8 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, this was well below the national average.
