Facility Inspections
In addition to performing well in its overall grade, this nursing home performed at an even higher level in the area of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A. Inspection scores are based on datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that excel in this area tend to have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these facilities generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. This facility was hit with 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered severe. This means that the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies to create an immediate threat to patient health or safety. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.
Nurse Quality
We also awarded this nursing home a grade of A- for our nursing grade. Our nursing rating analyzes many components, however, the primary one is the level of nurse hours spent with patients. This facility provided 4.4 hours of nursing care per patient daily, which was among the highest figures we found. Lastly, this facility also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at. By way of illustration, in terms of the percentage of its residents sustaining falls which lead to major injury, this facility performed as well as any facility in the nation. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can generally be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home fared well in the area of short-term care also. In fact, we gave it a score of A- for that area, which is one of our most impressive grades. Our short-term care scores are based on the nursing home's quantity of highly-skilled nursing services. This includes a wide scope of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, in addition to other variations of therapy. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. Finally, we assessed the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home, which as an area this nursing home performed much more favorably. This place outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes in the country with 59.1 percent of its patients returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most nursing homes.
Long-term Care Quality
The last area we analyzed proved to be this facility's poorest category. Nevertheless, even in its weakest link we still awarded it an acceptable grade of C for our long-term care category. In a long-term care setting, the primary goal is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. One of the statistics we considered in addition to this nursing home's impressive nursing hours is vaccines. This facility administered the pneumonia vaccination to 94.545456 percent of its patients. This is a proven method to avoid unnecessary hospitalizations for the aged 65 and up population. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. While it had 1.78 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score was better than most facilities since it had more complicated patients.
