Facility Inspections
While we were not high on this nursing home overall, we awarded it a grade of A- for our inspections rating. This score is significantly more impressive than the nursing home's overall score. Inspection scores are tied to several datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are a key thing to look for on these reports. You should especially avoid nursing homes with severe deficiencies linked to endangerment of patients. While this facility had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you the inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
Additionally, we awarded this nursing home a B in our short-term care category. This is one of our more impressive grades. In computing our short-term care grades, we analyze a facility's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other licensed professionals. This area is considered to be a meaningful assessment of a facility's rehabilitation. One reason for this facility's impressive score in this category is that it provides a significantly greater volume of physical therapist hours than the typical nursing home. The final item we assessed in this area is the number of patients who ultimately returned home from the nursing home. We found that it performed better than most facilities in this area with 52 percent of its patients returning home. At most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
We gave this facility a grade of just D for our nursing rating. The nursing category is based on a handful of subcategories, many of which are tied to nursing hours. This nursing home provides 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is slightly below the national average. In addition to receiving below average marks for total nursing hours, this nursing home was a bit less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing ratings. We looked at the percentage of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and found this place was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in this statistic. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that so many bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. This statistic dragged down this nursing home's nursing rating substantially.
Long-term Care Quality
The last category we graded is long-term care. This facility was given a bottom of the barrel grade of F in that category. In a long-term care setting, the facility's primary objective is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. On top of considering the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is more than most nursing homes. To our surprise, this nursing home also fared well at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had just 0.85 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in this category were not as favorable as these.
