Facility Inspections
In addition to being a first rate facility overall, this facility also performed well in our inspections category, where it earned an A+. Very few nursing homes fared this well in this category. Inspection grades account for several factors included in a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we rely on is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better grades in this category usually have very few of these severe deficiencies. This nursing home was hit with 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be major deficiencies. This means that the inspectors didn't consider any of these deficiencies to create an immediate risk to resident health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Contributing to its top-shelf assessment, this nursing home also was awarded a dominant long-term care grade, with a score of A. Nursing homes that excel in this category tend to provide patients with more supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. After assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination record. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia. Vaccines are vital to keeping patients out of the hospital. This facility also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 1.13 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a substantially lower hospitalization rate than the majority of nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
Among its many impressive grades, this facility received an excellent nursing grade. In fact, we gave it a grade of A- in that category. The nursing score consists of several subcategories, many of which are based on levels of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This facility performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can generally be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Short-term Care Quality
The last area we analyzed was short-term care. We awarded this facility one of our higher grades in this area, with a grade of B. While this is not as dominant as many of its other grades, it is nevertheless a perfectly acceptable grade. Short-term care scores are important for prospective residents in need of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically utilizes more highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means a broad range of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. One of this nursing home's strengths is registered nurse hours. We found that it offers more care from registered nurses to its residents than most facilities. The final item we looked at in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We found that it was above average in this area with 50.1 percent of its patients returning home.
