Facility Inspections
Although this facility's overall score was terrible, it actually fared pretty well in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a B+ for that area, which is one of our better scores. Inspection scores are based on pieces of information found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are an important thing to look for on these inspections. You should especially avoid nursing homes that have severe deficiencies associated with endangerment of patients. While this facility had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G through L. This means that the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A few minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we graded this facility so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing grade. In that area, we gave this facility an D. Our nursing grade assesses the facility's level of nurse staffing. We consider both the levels of licensure of the nurses and the quantity of hours spent with patients. This nursing home provides 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is slightly below the national average. In addition to its weak nursing hour totals, this facility also received poor scores in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at in calculating our nursing ratings. We found that more of this facility's residents sustained falls leading to major injury. We would argue that many falls could likely be prevented with better nursing care. This statistic contributed to this facility receiving a poor nursing grade.
Short-term Care Quality
As it turns out, this facility only earned a D for its short-term care score, which is not one of our better scores. Our short-term care grades are based in part on a facility's quantity of highly-skilled nursing services. This includes a broad scope of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, not to mention other variations of therapy. In this nursing home's case, we found that it provides far less registered nurse hours per patient than the average nursing home. Given its grade in this area, this did not surprise us. The final measure we assessed in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 35.8 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is well below average. This statistic was damning for this facility's short-term care grade.
Long-term Care Quality
The last category we rated is long-term care, in which this facility received an abysmal grade in this area as well. It received a lowly F in this area, which is obviously a major disappointment. In a long-term care setting, the primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. One of the statistics we considered after nurse's aid hours is vaccines. Thankfully, this nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccination to 98.42519 percent of its patients. To our surprise, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 0.76 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home has fewer hospitalizations than the majority of nursing homes. Sadly, a few of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.
