The primary reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it earned an elite inspection score. In fact, its inspection grade was far better than its overall grade. In the inspections category, we gave this facility an A. Arguably the most significant factor we look at in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better grades in this area most likely avoided the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. While this nursing home had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were severe based on CMS' scale. We should note that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in the industry.

This nursing home also performed well in the area of long-term care. In fact, we gave it a score of A for that area, which is one of our most impressive scores. When facilities receive this type of grade in long-term care it is a good sign for patient care and indicates that the facility is well-staffed with nurses aids. In addition to considering the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 98.93993 percent of its patients. Vaccines are vital to keeping patients out of the hospital. The last datapoint we looked at is the facility's hospitalization rate. We found that this nursing home had 2.35 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.

Moving on to another strength for this facility, it also received an elite nursing rating. We gave this facility a score of D. The nursing score weighs a host of factors. The most important variable is the quantity of hours nurses spend with residents. This nursing home averaged only 3.2 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. On top of its weak nursing hours, this facility received suboptimal marks in many of the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing ratings. We found that a higher percentage of this place's patients suffered falls leading to major injury.

The last category we graded is short-term care, which ended up being this facility's worst category. It received an abysmal F in this area, which is obviously a major concern. Short-term care grades are generally used to measure a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. In order to provide highly scored rehabilitation services, facilities generally must offer higher levels of skilled nursing. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. Unfortunately, we discovered that this facility offers less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of residents who ultimately were able to return home from this nursing home. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 30.7 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
