Facility Inspections
To go along with its favorable overall performance, we awarded this nursing home an A for our inspections rating. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing our inspection ratings. One of those factors is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies can be quite insignificant. While this facility had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means that the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home was awarded strong grades in the category of long-term care as well. Indeed, we gave it one of our most favorable grades in that area with a area of A-. Facilities that do well in this category tend to be well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to patients. After considering the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia. Vaccines are vital to keeping residents healthy. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.36 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility had fewer hospitalizations than many nursing homes.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home's next most favorable area is short-term care. We awarded it a B- in this area. This is essentially a middle of the pack grade in this area. Our short-term care ratings are thought to be more meaningful for individuals in need of rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation generally mandates higher levels of highly-skilled nursing services. This means not merely nursing services, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. The last metric we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents that ultimately returned home from the facility. We found that it fared better than most facilities in this metric with 50.5 percent of its residents returning home. At most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
The final area we looked at is nursing. This nursing home was awarded an impressive nursing grade in our assessment, with a B-. Although this was not nearly as strong as many of its other grades, this is still a respectable grade in that category. Nursing scores are largely associated with a nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This facility provided just 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This is a low total compared with most nursing homes. Lastly, we look at quality-based statistics, such as the percent of patients who suffered pressure ulcers and major falls. Sometimes these statistics are measures of the quality of nursing care.
