Short-term Care Quality
On top of earning a strong overall grade, this facility fared well in short-term care. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A for that category. Short-term care ratings are based on the nursing home's quantity of highly-skilled skilled healthcare professionals. This means a broad range of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other types of therapy. This nursing home provides more services with physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is usually a favorable sign. The final metric we assessed in this category is the number of residents who were able to return home from the facility. It fared better than most nursing homes in this area with 55 percent of its patients returning home.
Facility Inspections
Another strong feature for this facility was inspections, where it received a grade of B in that area. It outperformed most nursing homes in this category. Inspection scores weigh a host of factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better grades in this area usually have very few severe deficiencies. Fortunately, although this facility had a few minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Remember that deficiency-free inspections are uncommon in this industry.
Long-term Care Quality
Turning to another strength for this nursing home, we gave them one of our more favorable scores in our long-term care category as well, with a B. Facilities that receive this type of score in long-term care tend to provide consistent 24/7 care to ensure patients are well cared for. On top of looking at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 87.87062 percent of its patients, which is slightly less than we were hoping for. Lastly, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this place had 3.38 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. While this admittedly wasn't as strong as most of its other scores in this area, this number can be skewed for some facilities based on the medical complexity of patients.
Nurse Quality
The last category we analyzed was nursing. This nursing home was given a strong nursing rating in our assessment, with a grade of B. This nursing home truly didn't have any weak spots. We looked at the levels of nurses employed by the nursing home, as well as the number of hours the nurses worked with residents, in determining our score in this category. This nursing home provides an impressive 3.7 hours of nursing care per patient each day. Of this total, more than one fourth of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which is among the most highly skilled levels of nurses. We add more weight to hours provided by skilled nurses in determining our nursing scores. Finally, we also factored a few quality measures into our nursing grades. This nursing home was relatively weak in two of the major areas we focus on, with below average scores for minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. These areas are generally reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care provided.
