Although this nursing home's overall score was as bad as it gets, it performed pretty well in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a B+ for that area, which is one of our better scores. Inspection grades account for several factors included in a nursing home's inspection reports. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. You should avoid facilities with too many deficiencies flagged. Although this nursing home had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. A few minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.

Sadly, this facility only earned a D for its short-term care score, which is actually one of its better category grades. Short-term care grades are based on a facility's quantity of highly-skilled nursing services. This includes a vast scope of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. Based on its weak score in this category, we were not surprised to find that this place offered substantially fewer registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. The last item we considered in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 48.7 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these relatively poor statistics was damning for this facility's short-term care grade.

As it turns out, this facility only received a grade of D for its long-term care rating, which is not one of our better scores. When facilities receive a grade in this range in this category it typically means the facility didn't perform well in our quality measures relating to patient care. One of the statistics we considered after nursing hours was vaccinations. Candidly, we were a bit worried that this nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to only 38.245613 percent of its patients. Lastly, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. We found that this nursing home fared poorly with 3.16 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, this figure is nearly double the national average.

The final category we graded is nursing, where this nursing home received a poor score in this category as well. We gave it an abysmal F for this category, which is definitely a major concern. Nursing grades are tied to quality and quantity of nursing care. With only 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day, this place's nurse staffing levels were significantly below the national average. Unfortunately, this nursing home also had abysmal scores in several of the quality-based measures to pair with its weak nursing hour totals. We looked at the percent of patients experiencing pressure ulcers. This nursing home was at more than double the national average in this datapoint. This is concerning when you consider that so many pressure ulcers are preventable with better nursing care. This ended up sealing the facility's fate of earning a weak nursing rating.
