Facility Inspections
The main reason this nursing home received a decent overall score is its excellent inspections in recent years. We awarded them one of our higher grades in that category, with an A. This is a much better grade than the facility's overall grade, which was decent but not in the elite range. Inspection grades take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these factors by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.
Long-term Care Quality
In addition, we gave this facility a grade of B+ in our long-term care category. This is one of our more impressive grades. Facilities that excel in long-term care typically provide patients with closer supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. On top of assessing the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is higher than the majority of nursing homes. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality
Unfortunately, this facility received an F for its short-term care score. In our short-term care grade, we endeavor to craft a fair barometer for rehabilitation services. In this process, we look at the facility's level of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as respiratory therapy. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. Finally, we considered the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that just 3.8 percent of this facility's patients returned home.
Nurse Quality
The next area we assessed was nursing, which ended up being this nursing home's least impressive category. We gave it an abysmal F in this area, which is clearly very disappointing. There are a host of factors included in this area. Many of these subcategories relate to levels of nurse staffing. With only 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident daily, this facility's nurse staffing levels were quite a bit below average. On top of being below average in nursing hours per resident, this place also had poor marks in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing scores. We looked at the percent of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and major falls. This facility was at about 1.5 times the national average in both of these data points. This is a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are preventable with better nursing care. These metrics helped pull down this facility's nursing grade significantly.
