This nursing home earned a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to emphasize its nearly flawless government inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. Inspection ratings are based on pieces of information located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that receive favorable grades in this category tend to have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. Although this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' scale. A couple of minor deficiencies should not stop you from considering a nursing home.

This nursing home received its next best category grade in the area of long-term care. We gave this facility a grade of B- in this area, which is an acceptable score. In the category of long-term care, we assess the amount of care offered by a facility, rather than more medically-intensive services. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 99.4723 percent of its residents, which is higher than most nursing homes. This place also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.03 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

This facility's next best category was its nursing grade, where it received a grade of C. There are numerous criteria within this grade. Many of these criteria are tied to levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home averages just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is well below average. Lastly, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics. Although this facility got dinged a bit for its nursing hours, it excelled in a few of these quality metrics. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed remarkably well in this metric. This is generally an indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as having a system of turning a resident even once per day.

Moving on to our final category, this nursing home did not perform well. With a poor grade of F in short-term care, this is its worst category. Our short-term care grades are meaningful for individuals requiring rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally requires higher levels of highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means a wide scope of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. With its grade in this category, we weren't surprised to discover that this place was well below average in terms of the quantity of registered nurse and physical therapy hours offered to its patients based on the data we looked at. Finally, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This was not a strength for this facility. We found that just 3.4 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most nursing homes, around half of their patients are able to return home so this is well below average.
