Although we did not rate this facility favorably overall, we want to point out its nearly flawless inspections in recent years. We awarded them an A- in this category. These inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these factors by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this place had some deficiencies on its report, none were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. A few minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.

The next highest area we gave this facility in any area came in the area of long-term care, where we awarded it a grade of C. Our long-term care ratings are more critical for people needing more conventional services related to personal care. This nursing home's vaccination statistics weren't as strong as its nursing hours data. This nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to just 84.14986 percent of its residents. We'd like to see some improvement herein this statistic in the future. Lastly, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. This nursing home did not excel here either, with 3.2 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Although this figure is quite a bit higher than the national average, this number may be skewed for some facilities based on the medical complexity of patients.

Historical

Turning to the area of nursing care, this facility received a grade of just D in this category. Our nursing rating features several datapoints. The most heavily weighted factor is the number of hours nurses spend with patients. According to CMS records, this nursing home averaged 4.8 hours of nursing care per resident each day. This was actually above the national average. Keep in mind, however, that when we compute our nursing scores, we apply more weight to hours performed by nurses with a higher level of skill. Despite being above average in terms of nursing hours, this facility had abysmal scores in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing ratings. For starters, we looked at the percent of patients sustaining pressure ulcers. This nursing home was at more than double the national average in this statistic. This is quite alarming when you consider that many bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. This ended up sealing the nursing home's fate of receiving a very poor nursing grade.

Historical

Moving on to our final area, this nursing home really didn't perform well here either. With a bottom of the barrel grade of F in short-term care, this is just about as terrible as it gets. In determining our short-term care ratings, we look at the nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. This area is frequently a reliable assessment of a nursing home's ability to rehabilitate patients. It looks like this facility was subpar in terms of its quantity of registered nurse and physical therapy hours offered to its residents based on the measures we assessed. The final measure we considered in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to return home from the facility. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this area as well, with just 42 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, this was well below the national average.
