While this nursing home earned a decent overall rating, its inspections score is notably better than its overall score. Due to a strong inspection report this year, it earned a strong score in that category with a grade of B+. Perhaps the most important factor we look at in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Places with higher grades in this area most likely dodged the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. Fortunately, although this facility had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies shouldn't stop you from considering a nursing home.

This facility's second highest category turned out to be its short-term care score, where it was awarded a B-. In computing these short-term care ratings, we look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The purpose is to create a barometer for comparing the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. We were surprised to find that this place was below average in the two key staffing areas we assessed. In fact, it supplied fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. It is important to determine whether this also correlates to a lower quality of care. The final item we considered in this area is the percentage of patients that ultimately returned home from the nursing home. We found that just 0 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.

This facility's next best category was its nursing grade, where it received a grade of C. There are quite a few criteria included in this grade. Most of the subcategories are tied to the quantity of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides only 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This is a somewhat discouraging figure as it is well below average. Finally, despite not having the highest total nursing hours, this nursing home actually performed admirably in the metric of preventing major falls. This is often a reliable indicator that a nursing home has quality controls in place.

The final category we assessed is long-term care, turned out to be this nursing home's worst area. We gave this nursing home a grade of D in this area. In a long-term care environment, the facility's primary goal is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. On top of looking at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is more than most nursing homes. Surprisingly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home had less hospitalizations than most nursing homes. Unfortunately, a few of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.
