Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

On top of being a quality nursing home overall, this place excelled in the area of inspections, where it received an A+. Few facilities performed better in that area. Inspection scores weigh several factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One key criteria we rely on is the number and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with better scores in this area typically have very few severe deficiencies. While this place had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

Contributing to this nursing home's list of strengths, it also was awarded a top-shelf long-term care grade. We awarded them a strong grade of A- in this category. Nursing homes that receive this kind of grade in this category typically provide consistent around the clock care to ensure patients are kept in good health. On top of looking at the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccines are vital to keeping patients healthy. Finally, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

The next highest grade we gave this nursing home came in the category of nursing, where we gave it a grade of C. This wasn't quite as good as some of its other scores, but a grade in this range is not the end of the world. When calculating a facility's nursing score, we assess the quantity of hours nurses are caring for patients as well as the skill levels of the nurses. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Lastly, although this facility got docked a bit for nursing hours, it excelled in a few of our quality-based metrics. With fewer than five percent of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, it fared remarkably well in this statistic.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: D

This nursing home's worst category was short-term care, which is the last area we assessed. For this area, we gave this facility a grade of D. In determining our short-term care scores, we analyze a nursing home's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other types of therapists. This grade is more often than not a fair assessment of a nursing home's ability to rehabilitate patients. In this facility's case, we found that it offers fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than a typical facility. The last item we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients who returned home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 4.2 percent of its residents returning home.
