Long-term Care Quality
We awarded this facility an A for our long-term care rating. This grade is more impressive than the facility's overall grade. Nursing homes that do well in long-term care typically provide residents with more supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. Once we looked at the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination records. This facility vaccinated 98.173515 percent of its patients against pneumonia. Vaccines are vital to keeping residents healthy. Finally, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this nursing home had 2.9 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Although this admittedly wasn't as strong as most of its other scores in this category, this statistic may be skewed for some facilities due to some of the medical complexity of patients.
Facility Inspections
Inspections is another category where this nursing home excelled. We gave this facility an A for our inspections category. Inspection scores weigh several factors, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. It does not appear that we have deficiency data for this facility. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.
Nurse Quality
Turning to another strength for this facility, it also earned an elite nursing score. We gave this nursing home a grade of D. We weighed the levels of nurses at the facility, in addition to the quantity of time the nurses worked with patients, in determining our rating in this area. This particular nursing home provided 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is below average. On top of receiving below average scores for total nursing hours, this nursing home was a bit less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and found that this facility was at roughly 1.5 times the national average in this metric.
Short-term Care Quality
Turning to the final category, this nursing home really didn't fare well. With a bottom of the barrel grade of F in short-term care, this was this nursing home's worst category. In determining these short-term care grades, we quantify the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The goal is to formulate a measure for sizing up the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. The final datapoint we assessed in this area is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 21.8 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these subpar metrics was damning for this nursing home's short-term care grade.
