Nurse Quality

Grade: A

This nursing home received a strong overall grade as discussed above, but we especially wanted to point out its excellent nursing rating. We awarded them an A in this area. In determining our nursing ratings, we analyze both staffing levels and the levels of licensure of those nurses. This particular nursing home provided 4.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which was among the highest totals we found. Lastly, this facility also excelled in several quality-based metrics we looked at. With fewer than five percent of its residents experiencing pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home the country in this category. This is often an indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Many pressure ulcers can be avoided by providing better nursing care and having a protocol of turning patients more often.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

We also want to emphasize this facility's nearly flawless inspections in recent years. We gave them an impressive grade of A- in this category. Our inspection ratings are tied to items found on the a nursing home's recent government inspections. Nursing homes that receive favorable grades in this category have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. This nursing home received 6 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were considered to be major deficiencies. This tells you that the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies an immediate threat to resident health or safety. We should note that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in this industry.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

In addition, this facility also was awarded favorable long-term care grades in our assessment. In fact, we gave them one of our higher scores in that area, with a grade of B+. When facilities receive this type of grade in long-term care it is usually a good sign for resident care and indicates that the facility is well-staffed with nurses and aids. On top of offering elite levels of nursing care and other staffing, this facility gave the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccines are critical to keeping patients healthy. This combination proved to be effective as this facility keeps its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 1.28 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a much better hospitalization rate than the majority of nursing homes.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

The last category we assessed was short-term care, in which this facility was given a B-. This turned out to be this nursing home's worst category. This is still not the end of the world. Short-term care scores are based in part on a facility's quantity of skilled nursing services. This includes a broad spectrum of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, in addition to other types of therapy. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. The final metric we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients that returned home from the facility. We found that just 42.1 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. Unfortunately, this was below average.
