To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this place an A for the area of inspections. Inspection ratings account for several factors included in a nursing home's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher scores in this area tend to have very few of these severe deficiencies. Although this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Among this nursing home's other strengths is its first-rate long-term care grade. It received one of our more impressive scores in that category, with a grade of A. When nursing homes receive this kind of grade in long-term care it is a good sign for resident care and suggests that the place is well-staffed with nurses and aids. Once we finished looking at the volume of nursing care, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia is often a deadly health condition for nursing home residents so we strongly prefer when a nursing home does not take any chances. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

This facility's next best category grade came in the area of nursing. In that category, we gave this nursing home a grade of C. This wasn't quite on par with some of its other category grades mentioned above. Our nursing score is mostly tied to a nursing home's nurse staffing. This facility provided just 0.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a relatively low total compared to most other facilities. Lastly, we also looked at several nursing quality measures. Although this nursing home got docked a bit for its nursing hours, it excelled in some of these quality measures. With fewer than five percent of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, it performed very well in this metric. This is generally an indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as employing a protocol of moving patients more frequently.

The final area we looked at was short-term care, which turned out to be this facility's worst area. We gave this facility a grade of D in this area. Of course, this category pulled down the facility's overall profile a bit. In the area of short-term care, we endeavor to evaluate measures of a facility's rehabilitation. We look at the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provides fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most other facilities. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients who returned home from this facility. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 0 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
