While we were fairly low on this facility overall, we awarded it an A- for our inspections rating. This score is far more impressive than the nursing home's overall grade. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining our inspection ratings. One key factor is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some of these end up being relatively insignificant. This particular nursing home received 5 deficiencies on its inspection report. Overall, this is still a solid inspection report, but we'd always recommend looking into any deficiencies you find troubling.

This facility also was given a favorable short-term care grade. As a matter of fact, we awarded it a B in this area, which happens to be one of our better. With our short-term care score, we try to create a sound barometer for rehabilitation. In this process, we look at the facility's offerings of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. One of this nursing home's strengths is physical therapy hours. We found that it offers at least 50% more hours with physical therapists to its residents than most other facilities. Lastly, we looked at the number of residents that ultimately were able to return home from this nursing home. On top of excelling in the area of physical therapy hours, we found that it fared as well as just about any facility in the country with 60.6 percent of its residents returning home.

Another issue is the F this facility was given in the category of long-term care. In a long-term care environment, the facility's primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. Once we looked at the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination records. This facility vaccinated 96.954315 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is better than the vast majority of nursing homes. To our surprise, this nursing home also fared well at keeping its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Sadly, some of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.

Moving on to our last category, this facility really did not fare very well in this category either. With a poor grade of F in nursing, this is really as terrible as it gets. Our nursing rating weighs several data points, but the main consideration is the level of nurse hours spent with patients. This nursing home averages 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is below the national average. To pair with its below average total nursing hours per patient, this facility had really poor marks in several of the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing grades. For starters, we looked at the percentage of residents experiencing falls which led to major injury. This facility was at more than 1.5 times the national average in this statistic. This is concerning in light of the fact that so many falls could likely be prevented with better nursing care. This ended up sealing the nursing home's fate of earning a poor nursing grade.
