In addition to receiving a great overall grade, this nursing home received an A+ in the area of short-term care. In calculating our short-term care scores, we look at the nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This rating is often a fair measure of the nursing home's rehabilitation. This facility excelled at the highest level in two key staffing areas we assessed. It provided about 50% more care from registered nurses and physical therapists than the average facility. This is often an excellent sign. The final datapoint we looked at in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in Puerto Rico in this area with 58.2 percent of its patients returning home. At most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
One of the other reasons we rated this facility so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of A+. In computing our nursing ratings, we factor in both nursing hours and the levels of licensure of those nurses. This place boasts a really impressive 5.8 hours of nursing care per resident daily, of which a significant portion of those hours were provided by registered nurses. This is one of the most highly trained levels of nurses. On top of offering high levels of nursing care, this place also excelled in the quality measures we looked at. It performed as well as any nursing home in Puerto Rico in terms of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls.
Long-term Care Quality
In the next area we looked at, this facility received superb marks in the area of long-term care. For this reason, it received one of our most impressive scores in that category with a of A+. Nursing homes that receive this kind of grade in this category tend to provide consistent 24/7 care to ensure residents are well cared for. Once we assessed the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination records. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that this nursing home submitted data regarding vaccinations. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
Adding to its impressive category grades, this nursing home also excelled in inspections, where it earned an elite grade of A. This finished off a straight A report card for this place. Perhaps the most important factor we consider in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Places with better grades in this area typically avoided the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. While this nursing home had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are found in categories G through L. This means that the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
