Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home really excelled in the area of short-term care, where it earned an A-. Few facilities fared better in this category. If it wasn't for this category, this nursing home's overall grade would have been much worse. In computing our short-term care ratings, we look at the nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. This category is considered to be a fair measure of the nursing home's rehabilitation services. When we looked at this facility's physical therapist hours, we found it offered more hours of physical therapy per day to its residents than most nursing homes. The last metric we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents who returned home from the facility. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in California in this area with 62.7 percent of its patients returning home. At most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
In addition, we awarded this nursing home a grade of B+ in our nursing category. This is one of our better grades. Nursing ratings are largely tied to the facility's nurse staffing. This nursing home provided 4.1 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis, which was among the better totals we found. Lastly, this place was also above average in each of the major quality measures we looked at in this category. It performed well in terms of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls.
Facility Inspections
In addition, this facility also excelled in the area of inspections, where it received a grade of B+. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. Arguably the most significant factor we look at in computing our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better grades in this category most likely avoided the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. Fortunately, although this facility had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means the inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Keep in mind that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in this industry.
Long-term Care Quality
The last area we analyzed is long-term care. We awarded this facility a D in the area of long-term care, making this the nursing home's weakest area. If you are looking for services other than short-term rehabilitation, you should take a close look at long-term care ratings. After looking at nursing hours provided by this facility, we next considered the facility's vaccination statistics. With a long-term care grade in this range, we were pleasantly surprised to find that this nursing home received respectable marks in both statistics. Indeed, this nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which appears to be higher than many nursing homes. To our surprise, this place also keeps its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.78 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Sadly, a few of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.
