While we were not high on this nursing home's overall performance, it actually received an impressive inspection report this year with few dings from the applicable government inspectors. As a result, it received one of our better grades in that category with a B+. Our inspection scores account for several factors included in a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. You should avoid nursing homes with too many severe deficiencies flagged. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even with this deficiency, this was still a relatively positive inspection report.

This facility's second most favorable area turned out to be its short-term care grade, where it was awarded a grade of B-. In calculating our short-term care scores, we look at a nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This grade is more often than not a meaningful assessment of the facility's rehabilitation services. One reason for this facility's strong score in this category is that it provides a greater volume of physical therapist hours to its residents than the average nursing home. Finally, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. It outperformed most facilities with 56.5 percent of its patients returning home.

This facility's second lowest category is long-term care, where it earned just a D in that category. This is a well below average grade. If you are seeking services other than rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each nursing home's long-term care grades. Once we looked at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 98.6532 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is more than the average nursing home. To our surprise, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.67 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility has fewer hospitalizations than most nursing homes. Sadly, a few of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.

Moving on to the fourth area, this nursing home really did not fare well here either. Due to a rock bottom grade of F in nursing, this is really as terrible as it gets. When calculating our nursing scores, we analyze both nursing hours and the training levels of those nurses. This facility averaged a meager 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident each day. To pair with its subpar totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this facility also did not perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of patients experiencing major falls and pressure ulcers. This nursing home had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average facility. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, these metrics hurt this facility's nursing rating significantly.
