Facility Inspections
To go along with its decent overall grade, we gave this nursing home an A for our inspections rating. This grade is far better than its overall score. Inspection grades are tied to datapoints found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that excel in this category have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. This facility was assessed 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This indicates that the government inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies to cause an imminent risk to resident health or safety. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.
Long-term Care Quality
Another one of this facility's more favorable category grades was in the area of long-term care. In that area, we gave this nursing home a B. It actually performed better than most nursing homes in this category. For prospective patients seeking a permanent place to live as opposed to rehabilitation, long-term care grades are very important. After assessing the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 76 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which happens to be slightly lower than we anticipated but still a reasonably acceptable figure. While its vaccination rate was a bit lower than we hoped for, at least this place was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Nurse Quality
We also gave this nursing home a decent score in the category of nursing care, with a grade of B-. The nursing rating weighs a host of factors. The most important variable is the quantity of hours nurses spent with residents. This nursing home averages just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is well below average. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics. Although this facility got dinged a bit for its nursing hours per resident, it actually excelled in a few of these quality metrics. With less than five percent of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, it did very well in this metric. This is typically an indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can typically be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as having a policy of turning a patient more frequently.
Short-term Care Quality
Moving on to our next area, we awarded this nursing home a D in our short-term care category. This was the nursing home's weakest category score. Naturally, this score pulled down the facility's overall grade a bit. In computing these short-term care ratings, we look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The objective is to create a scale for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. Lastly, we assessed the number of residents who eventually returned home from this facility. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 4.4 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit off the national average.
