Long-term Care Quality
On top of being a quality facility overall, this nursing home really fared well in long-term care, where it received an A+. When facilities receive this kind of score in this category it is a good sign for resident care and suggests that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses and aids. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is far higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. The last datapoint we looked at was the facility's hospitalization rate. We found that this nursing home had 2.57 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
Facility Inspections
In addition, this nursing home also excelled in the area of inspections, where it received an A-. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. Inspection grades weigh several factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher grades in this category usually have very few severe deficiencies. This place was hit with 7 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none were considered to be major deficiencies. This means that the government inspectors did not consider any of these deficiencies to cause an imminent threat to resident safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
Turning to the category of nursing care, this facility didn't perform quite as well in this area as some of the categories discussed above. Nevertheless, a grade of C in this category is by no means a bad score. In calculating a facility's nursing grade, we assess the number of hours nurses commit to patients as well as the level of skill of those nurses. This facility provided 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as minimizing major falls. This place performed admirably in this metric. Avoiding serious falls is generally an indicator that a nursing home has quality controls in place. Many falls can be avoided if a nursing home offers enough nurses aids to assist its residents.
Short-term Care Quality
The last area we rated was short-term care, which proved to be this nursing home's weakest category. We awarded this nursing home a D in that category. Unfortunately, this grade hurt the facility's overall profile to some degree. In computing our short-term care scores, we look at a facility's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. This category is typically a fair assessment of a facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. In this nursing home's case, we found that it offered less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. Lastly, we considered the percentage of patients that ultimately returned home from this facility. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 42.6 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home.
