Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-plus

One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an A+ long-term care grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this category. Facilities that excel in this category tend to provide patients with better supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. In addition to looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 99.507385 percent of its patients, which is significantly higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-plus

This high end nursing home also performed remarkably in the area of short-term care, where we awarded it a grade of A+. Only a small group of facilities performed better in this area. In crafting our short-term care scores, we look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The objective is to devise a measure for comparing the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. Fortunately, it looks like this facility employs registered nurses. Not every nursing home employs these types of nurses. However, based on the information this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The last measure we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that 6.4 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

Another impressive feature of this nursing home is its inspection score. In that area, we awarded this facility a score of A-. Our inspection ratings are tied to datapoints found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that receive favorable grades in this area have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A-minus

Moving on to our fourth area, this facility was given an extremely favorable nursing grade. In fact, we gave it an A- in this category, giving this facility straight A's. Our nursing rating focuses on the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. We weigh both the levels of licensure of the nurses and the number of hours spent with residents. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at a few quality measures in determining our nursing grades. This place excelled in these areas, with excellent scores for minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. These areas are generally reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care a nursing home provides.
