Registered Staff Hours
Long-term Care Quality
Although we gave this facility a terrible overall grade, we awarded it a grade of B- for our long-term care rating. In a long-term care environment, the primary objective is to maintain residents' quality of life and keep them safe. One of the datapoints we considered after nursing hours is vaccines. Thankfully, this facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. This facility also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Facility Inspections
As it turns out, its government inspection reports were not the source of this nursing home's abysmal overall grade. In fact, it received a C in this category. These inspection grades take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This place was hit with 6 deficiencies on its government inspection report, but we were relieved to find that none were in any of the categories labeled G through L. This means that CMS didn't consider any of the deficiencies to present an imminent risk to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility was cited by CMS for possible abuse or neglect. We would not recommend this facility under any circumstance.

Short-term Care Quality
We were also stunned to find that this facility received a somewhat respectable short-term care rating in our assessment. We gave it a grade of C in that category. Our short-term care grades are critical for people needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically mandates additional highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes a broad spectrum of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other types of therapy. In this nursing home's case, we were surprised to learn that it actually provides less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than the average facility. The hope is always that this does not adversely affect the quality of care. Finally, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 0 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most facilities, closer to half of their patients are able to return home so this figure is below average.
Nurse Quality
The last category we rated was nursing, which ended up being this nursing home's weakest category. We awarded this nursing home a grade of D in that area. We looked at the levels of nurses at the nursing home, as well as the number of hours the nurses worked with residents, in computing our score in this area. With just 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis, this nursing home's nurse staffing levels were far below the national average. Lastly, we also looked at a few quality-based metrics in determining our nursing scores. This nursing home was above average in two of the areas we considered, with solid scores for minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. These areas are typically good measures of the quality of nursing care offered.
