Short-term Care Quality
In addition to being a first rate facility overall, this facility also excelled in our short-term care category, where it received a grade of A. Few nursing homes fared better in this area. In determining our short-term care scores, we look at the facility's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. This rating is generally a useful assessment of a nursing home's rehabilitation. Unfortunately, we weren't able to find information on registered nurse or physical therapy staffing for this nursing home. Lastly, we assessed the number of patients who eventually returned home from this facility. We found that 7 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home.
Long-term Care Quality
We also wanted to point out the fact that this nursing home was awarded a high-end score of A in our long-term care category. Facilities that do well in long-term care typically provide patients with better supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. On top of looking at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 98.3871 percent of its residents, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia is too frequently a life or death condition for nursing home patients so we like it when a facility doesn't take any chances. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Facility Inspections
Another quality feature of this nursing home is its inspection grade. In that category, we awarded this facility an A. Arguably the most critical factor we look at in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher grades in this category typically dodged the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. Although this facility had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
The last area we scored proved to be this facility's worst category. However, even in its worst category we still gave it an acceptable grade of C for nursing. Our nursing rating features a host of data points. The most heavily weighted factor is the amount of time nurses spent with residents. This place provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This is a lower figure than we were hoping for. Lastly, our nursing scores also factor in quality-based measures, such as avoiding major falls. Despite not having the highest total nursing hours, this facility performed admirably in the metric of preventing major falls. This is typically an indicator that a nursing home has quality controls in place. Some falls could be avoided if a facility supplies enough nurses to assist its patients.
