Short-term Care Quality
To go along with its strong overall grade, we gave this nursing home an A+ for our short-term care grade. In determining our short-term care grades, we size up the nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly trained professionals. This rating is considered to be a useful measure of the facility's rehabilitation services. One of this nursing home's strength is that it offers more than seven hours of care per week from registered nurses to each resident. This is really the gold standard in this area, as it's about 50% higher than the average facility's level of registered nurse staffing. The final datapoint we looked at in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in Michigan in this area with 64.1 percent of its residents returning home. For most nursing homes, less than half of their short-stay patients are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we graded this facility so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing score. Nursing turned out to be its second best category grade. In that category, we awarded this facility a grade of B+. There are a host of subcategories within this grade. Many of the datapoints are tied to levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home provided 3.9 hours of nursing care per patient each day. Approximately a quarter of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most highly skilled levels of nurses. These are both impressive figures, which typically corresponds with quality care. Lastly, we also looked at nursing quality measures in determining our nursing ratings. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these statistics as good measures of the caliber of nursing care being provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Facility Inspections
We also found that this facility has earned favorable government inspections in recent years. In fact, we awarded it a B- in this category. This is better than many facilities in this category. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating our inspection scores. One critical factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some can be relatively insignificant. This particular nursing home received 5 deficiencies on its inspection report. Overall, this is still a good inspection report, but we'd always recommend looking into any deficiencies you find troubling.
Long-term Care Quality
The final category we rated was long-term care. This nursing home was awarded a grade of C in this area. In computing these long-term care grades, we look at the facility's personal care services. In addition to considering the above average level of care provided by nurses and other staff at this nursing home, we also were happy with the nursing home's vaccination data. For example, this nursing home gave the pneumonia vaccine to 99.23372 percent of its patients, which is an impressive total. Lastly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.66 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home had fewer hospitalizations than most nursing homes.
