Short-term Care Quality
To go along with its strong overall score, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for its short-term care rating. In forming our short-term care ratings, we assess the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The purpose is to create a tool for comparing the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. Remarkably, this nursing home provides about 50% more services from physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is a very favorable sign. The final measure we looked at in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in Minnesota in this area with 69.7 percent of its residents returning home. At most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.

This facility boasts a really impressive 5.4 hours of nursing care per patient daily, of which a significant percentage was provided by registered nurses. This is one of the most highly trained levels of nurses. On top of offering impressive levels of nursing care, this nursing home also excelled in the quality measures we looked at. By way of illustration, it performed as well as any facility in the country when it comes to minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these areas as predictive measures of the caliber of nursing care being provided.

Nursing homes that receive favorable grades in this category typically have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. Although this facility had a few deficiencies on its report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
