Short-term Care Quality
To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A for our short-term care grade. Our short-term care grades are probably most critical for folks requiring a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually requires higher levels of highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means not only nursing, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other types of therapy. One reason for this facility's strong score in this category is that it provides more care with registered nurses to its residents than the average nursing home. The final metric we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents that eventually returned home from the nursing home. We found that it performed better than most nursing homes in this area with 53 percent of its residents returning home. With most facilities, less than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Facility Inspections
Adding to its impressive grades, we gave this facility an A- for our inspections rating. Our inspection scores account for several factors included in a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better grades in this category generally have few severe deficiencies. This facility was assessed 6 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This indicates that CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies to cause an immediate threat to resident health or safety. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe made us feel better about this inspection report.
Nurse Quality
This facility is also strong in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of B+. It outperformed most nursing homes in this category. We assessed the levels of nurses at the facility, in addition to the quantity of time those nurses spent with residents, in determining our rating in this area. This place provides an incredible 5.4 hours of nursing care per patient daily. Very few nursing homes provide this quantity of nursing care to their patients. Out of this total, many of the hours were provided by registered nurses, which is one of the most highly highly trained levels of nurses. In addition to looking at levels of nursing care, we also looked at a few quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these areas as predictive indicators of the quality of nursing care offered, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Long-term Care Quality
The last area we analyzed is long-term care, which was this nursing home's least impressive area. We gave this facility a grade of D in this area. Nevertheless, we wouldn't assess this nursing home based only on a single weak area, since it was given a few superb scores in other categories. In a long-term care environment, the nursing home's primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. After assessing nursing care provided by this facility, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination statistics. With a long-term care grade in this range, we were surprised to learn that this facility received respectable marks in both statistics. In fact, this nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is higher than most nursing homes. Surprisingly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility has fewer hospitalizations than the average nursing home. Sadly, some of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.
