Although we didn't rate this nursing home favorably overall, we actually gave it an excellent grade in the category of inspections, where it earned an A-. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing our inspection scores. One of those factors is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is arguably more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some can be quite insignificant. While this facility had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. A few minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.

In addition, we gave this nursing home a grade of B in our long-term care category. This is one of our higher grades. When facilities receive a score in this range in long-term care it typically means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to live on a permanent basis. On top of looking at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents, which is higher than most nursing homes. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.03 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

The third area we looked at is short-term care. This nursing home's was given an unfortunate short-term care grade where it received an F. In crafting these short-term care ratings, we assess the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The goal is to create a scale for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various facilities. Based on its score in this area, we weren't stunned to find that this place was well below average in terms of its number of registered nurse and physical therapy hours offered to its residents based on the metrics we assessed. Finally, we assessed the percentage of residents that who were able to eventually return home from this nursing home. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 4.5 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.

Turning to our last area, this facility didn't fare very well in this area either. With a bottom of the barrel grade of F in nursing, this is just about as terrible as it gets. The nursing grade includes several data points, most of which are associated with levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home provided a meager 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This statistic is significantly below the national average. To pair with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this place had really poor scores in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at in determining our nursing scores. We looked at the percent of residents experiencing falls which led to serious injury. This nursing home was at more than 150 percent of the national average in this statistic.
