Although this facility's overall grade was terrible, it actually fared pretty well in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a B for that category, which is one of our better scores. Arguably the most significant factor we look at in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. It is typically best to avoid facilities that have too many severe deficiencies. While this place had a few deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. A couple minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.

Sadly, this facility only received a grade of D for its short-term care score, which ended up being one of its more favorable category scores. Our short-term care scores are thought to be most important for folks requiring a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually mandates additional skilled nursing. This includes not only nursing services, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. With its grade in this category, we weren't stunned to learn that this facility is well below average in terms of its quantity of registered nurse and physical therapy hours provided to its patients based on the data we assessed. Honestly, this was what we expected here. The last area we assessed in this category is the number of patients that ultimately were able to return home from the nursing home. It fared better in this area, with 57 percent of its patients returning home. This was just about this nursing home's only redeeming quality in this category.

In addition, we gave this facility an F in the area of nursing care. The nursing rating features a variety of subcategories. The most important factor is the quantity of hours nurses spent with patients. This facility provided just 2.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Unfortunately, this place also had abysmal marks in some of the quality-based measures to go along with its low nursing hour totals. We looked at the percentage of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and we were quite disappointed. This place was at approximately 1.5 times the national average in this measure.

Long-term Care Quality

Switching gears to the final category, this nursing home did not perform well in this area either. With a rock bottom grade of F in long-term care, this is about as bad as it gets. When facilities receive a grade in this range in this category it generally means the nursing home did not perform well in our measures relating to resident care. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 85.43833 percent of its patients. This is many points less than what we expected. To our surprise, this place wasn't as bad as we expected at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Although it had 2.56 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score wasn't bad due to it having some more complicated patients.
