Nurse Quality
On top of performing well in its overall score, this nursing home earned even higher grades in the area of nursing. In fact, we gave it one of our best scores in that category with an A. Nursing grades are based largely on quality and quantity of nursing care. This nursing home offers a very impressive 4.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is among the higher totals in California. Lastly, this facility also excelled in several quality-based metrics we looked at. With less than five percent of its residents experiencing pressure ulcers, this place performed as well as any nursing home the state in this category. This is generally a good indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls. Many pressure ulcers can be avoided by providing better nursing care and having a system of turning patients more often.
Facility Inspections
This facility also performed well in inspections, which is based on its recent inspection reports. In fact, we awarded it an A- for that area, which is one of our top scores. Our inspection scores account for a host of factors found on a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher scores in this category usually have few severe deficiencies. Fortunately, although this place had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G through L. This means the government inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple relatively minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
The third category we assessed is long-term care. This nursing home was awarded a favorable long-term care grade, with a grade of B in this area. When facilities receive this type of grade in this category it is usually a good sign for patient care and suggests that the place is well-staffed with nurses and aids. On top of really impressive nursing hour statistics, this facility's vaccination record is as good as it gets also. In fact, this nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia. The last datapoint we looked at is the nursing home's hospitalization rate. Here we found that this place had 4.34 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Although this wasn't as impressive as some of its other scores in this area, this statistic can be skewed for some facilities due to the preexisting medical conditions of patients.
Short-term Care Quality
The final category we rated was short-term care. We gave this facility a decent score in this area, with a grade of B-. Although this wasn't as favorable as several of its other scores, it is still not a bad grade. Short-term care scores are based on a nursing home's quantity of skilled highly skilled professionals. This includes a wide spectrum of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, not to mention other forms of therapy. When we looked at this facility's physical therapist hours, we found it offered more hours of physical therapy per day to its residents than most nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 21.1 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most facilities, closer to half of their residents are able to return home so this is below average.
