Registered Staff Hours
Short-term Care Quality
One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great facility is that it received a very impressive short-term care grade. In that area, we gave this facility a grade of A. In calculating our short-term care ratings, we size up a facility's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other types of therapists. This area is considered to be a meaningful measure of the facility's rehabilitation services. Fortunately, it appear that this facility employs registered nurses. Not all facilities employs these types of nurses. However, based on the information this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. Finally, we assessed the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 7.5 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we rated this facility so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing rating. In fact, nursing turned out to be its second best category grade. In that category, we gave this facility an A. Nursing scores are primarily tied to a facility's level of nurse staffing. This facility provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility the state in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as employing a system of turning residents more frequently.

Long-term Care Quality
Turning our next category, this facility received an excellent long-term care score. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A- in that category. Long-term care grades of this caliber generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 97.25777 percent of its patients, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia is too frequently a life or death illness for nursing home residents so we prefer when a nursing home doesn't roll the dice on this issue. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
Facility Inspections
Turning to inspections, it appears this nursing home has received quality government inspections in recent years as well. We gave it a grade of B in this category. Arguably the most important factor we look at in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. Places with better scores in this category typically avoided the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. Fortunately, although this facility had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G through L. This tells you the government inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. We should point out that deficiency-free inspections are rare in the industry.
