Short-term Care Quality
To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A for our short-term care grade. In calculating our short-term care grades, we size up the facility's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other licensed professionals. This category is considered to be a solid measure of the nursing home's rehabilitation services. This nursing home boosted its score in this category by offering more than 50% more physical therapy hours to its residents than the average facility. Finally, we looked at the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of facilities in the country with 70.7 percent of its patients returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most nursing homes.
Facility Inspections
In addition, this facility also performed well in our inspection category, which is based on its inspections. We gave it an A- for that area, which is one of our best scores. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating our inspection ratings. One key factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies are relatively minor. Fortunately, although this place had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Remember that deficiency-free inspections are uncommon in this industry.
Nurse Quality
Another strong feature for this facility is that it received an impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B+. When computing our nursing ratings, we analyze both staffing levels and the skill levels of those nurses. This place offers extremely high levels of nursing care, averaging 4.5 hours per patient daily. This is more nursing care than nearly any other nursing home provides. Lastly, this nursing home was also above average in each of the major quality measures we assessed in this category. It performed well when it comes to minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility's least impressive area was long-term care, which is the final category we scored. For this category, we awarded this nursing home a grade of D. We would like to to draw your attention to this possible weak link, but you should not dwell on a single bad area either. For residents looking for a permanent place to live rather than rehabilitation, long-term care grades are an important measure. Due to its grade in this category, we were surprised to discover that this facility received good marks in both nursing hours and its vaccination records. In fact, this facility gave the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. This percentage is actually higher than the average nursing home. To our surprise, this place also keeps its residents out of the hospital. It had just 0.91 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Sadly, some of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.
