This facility received a strong overall score as described above, but we wanted to note its excellent short-term care score. We gave them an A in this category. Short-term care grades are commonly employed to measure a facility's performance with rehabilitation. To have highly graded rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must have better levels of highly skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other types of therapists. Fortunately, it appear that this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not all nursing homes employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, according to the data this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Finally, we considered the number of patients who returned home from this facility. We found that 5.5 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home.

One of the other reasons we graded this nursing home so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing grade. In that category, we gave this facility a grade of B+. When computing our nursing ratings, we weigh both the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the skill levels of the nurses. This facility provided 0.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This facility performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can frequently be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

In addition, this facility also performed well in our inspection category, which is based on the facility's recent inspection reports. In fact, we gave it a grade of B+ for that category, which is among our best grades. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing our inspection scores. One critical factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies end up being quite minor. Although this nursing home had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor made us feel better about this inspection report.

This facility gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is higher than most nursing homes. Lastly, this nursing home was also able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
