Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall grade was decent, it really excelled in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A+ for that category, which is one of our best scores. These inspection ratings weigh several factors, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these factors by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This nursing home was hit with 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none of the deficiencies were considered severe. This tells you that CMS didn't consider any of these deficiencies to pose an immediate risk to resident health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also performed well in the category of long-term care, with a strong score of A in this category. When nursing homes receive a grade in this range in this category it typically means it's well-staffed and is an overall good place to live on a permanent basis. On top of considering the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is significantly higher than most nursing homes. The last datapoint we assessed was the nursing home's hospitalization rate. Here we found that this nursing home had 2.1 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.
Nurse Quality
Turning to another strength for this facility, it also earned an elite nursing rating. We gave this nursing home a score of D. The nursing score is based on many factors, but the most important consideration is the level of nurse hours per patient per week. This nursing home provides 2.9 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. In addition to its below average nursing hour totals, this nursing home earned suboptimal scores in several of the quality-based measures we considered in determining our nursing grades. We found that more of this facility's residents suffered falls which led to major injury. We would argue that many falls could likely be prevented with better nursing care. This statistic contributed to this place receiving a terrible nursing score.
Short-term Care Quality
The final area we rated is short-term care, which turned out to be this nursing home's weakest area. Sadly, it received an F for this area, which is obviously a major disappointment. Short-term care grades are often employed to score a facility's rehabilitation services. To offer highly graded rehabilitation services, facilities generally must feature higher levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other types of therapists. Unfortunately, this nursing home was below average in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its residents based on the measures we assessed. The final metric we looked at in this category is the number of patients that returned home from the facility. This facility struggled quite a bit in this area as well, with just 25.5 percent of its patients returning home.
