Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

The main reason this facility received a decent overall score is its impeccable government inspections in recent years. We awarded them one of our better scores in that category, with a grade of A-. This is a much better score than the facility's overall score, which was decent but certainly not elite. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining our inspection grades. One of those factors is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some end up being relatively minor. This nursing home received 7 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe. This tells you that the inspectors didn't consider any of these deficiencies to cause an imminent risk to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

Another one of this facility's better category grades was in the area of long-term care. In that category, we awarded this facility a grade of B. It actually outperformed most facilities in this category. Facilities that receive this kind of grade in long-term care typically provide consistent 24/7 care to make sure residents are kept in good health. On top of looking at the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is very impressive. Pneumonia sadly can be a dangerous health condition for nursing home patients so we like it when a facility doesn't roll the dice on this issue. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B

Additionally, we also would like to note that this nursing home received impressive short-term care marks this year. We awarded them one of our more favorable scores in that category, with a grade of B. In forming these short-term care ratings, we quantify the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our objective is to devise a scale for sizing up the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. It doesn't appear that this nursing home submitted registered nurse or physical therapist staffing data. The final measure we considered in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return home. We found that 6.2 percent of this nursing home's patients were able to return home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: F

The next area we assessed is nursing. It received a lowly F for this category, which is an abysmal score. This is certainly a significant concern. Our nursing score analyzes the facility's level of nurse staffing. We factor in both the levels of skill of the nurses as well as the number of hours spent with patients. This facility provided a meager 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This number is far below average. In addition to rating below average in nursing hours per resident, this facility also had poor marks in the quality-based metrics we looked at in calculating our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This place was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in both of these data points. This is a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These statistics pulled down this nursing home's nursing rating significantly.
