Short-term Care Quality
To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this facility an A for our short-term care grade. Our short-term care grades are important for patients needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally requires higher levels of skilled nursing services. This means a broad range of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other types of therapy. One of this nursing home's strength is that it offers more than seven hours of care per week from registered nurses to each resident. This is really the gold standard in this area, as it's about 50% higher than the average facility's level of registered nurse staffing. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. This place outperformed the vast majority of facilities with 59.5 percent of its patients returning home.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we rated this facility so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing rating. In fact, nursing turned out to be its second best category grade. In that category, we gave this nursing home an A. Our nursing rating analyzes several subcategories, however, the main consideration is the quantity of nurse hours spent with patients. This facility boasts an impressive 3.9 hours of nursing care per resident each day, of which more than an hour of these were provided by registered nurses. This is one of the most highly skilled levels of nurses. Finally, this nursing home also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at. In terms of the percentage of its residents suffering falls leading to serious injury, this nursing home performed as well as any facility in the nation.
Facility Inspections
In addition, this nursing home also performed well in our inspection category, which is based on the facility's recent inspection reports. We gave it an impressive grade of A- for that category, which is among our best grades. Perhaps the most critical factor we consider in computing our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Nursing homes with better scores in this category most likely avoided the most severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. While this nursing home had a few minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. We should note that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in this industry.
Long-term Care Quality
The last category we graded is long-term care, which ended up being a low point for this facility. We awarded this nursing home a D in our long-term care category, rendering this its weakest area. We would nevertheless suggest that you look at the bigger picture. Facilities that don't fare well in this category typically are not as well-staffed and are lagging in a few of the areas of routine healthcare services we looked at. This nursing home's vaccination data were not as favorable as its nursing hours data. This facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to just 89.13043 percent of its residents. We would like to see some improvement in this area in the future. We were stunned with the facility's hospitalization rate. We found that this nursing home had 4.37 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is more than twice the national average. This is certainly a concerning statistic.
