Facility Inspections
While we were not very complementary of this facility's overall score, it received a very impressive inspection report this year. In fact, it received a nearly flawless inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our best grades in that category with a grade of A-. Perhaps the most important factor we look at in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. It is generally best to avoid places that had a long list of deficiencies. While this place had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G through L. This tells you that the government inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A few minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
The next best area we gave this nursing home in any area came in the area of long-term care, where we gave it a grade of C. In a long-term care environment, the primary goal is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. Once we assessed the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination record. This facility vaccinated 92.85714 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is slightly lower than we expected but still a reasonably acceptable percentage. Finally, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. We found that this place had 2.28 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. While this figure is quite a bit higher than the national average, this statistic may be skewed for some facilities due to the preexisting medical conditions of residents.
Nurse Quality
Turning to the area of nursing care, this facility received a grade of just D in this category. We looked at the levels of nurses at the facility, in addition to the quantity of hours those nurses spent with patients, in determining our score in this category. This nursing home averaged just 3.1 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality measures in calculating our nursing ratings. This place fared well in terms of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. Many consider these areas to be indicators of the quality of nursing care.
Short-term Care Quality
The last category we scored was short-term care, which is this nursing home's least impressive category. We gave this facility a D in that area. Our short-term care ratings are probably more meaningful for residents in need of a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually mandates additional skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means not only nursing services, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. With its grade in this category, we were not stunned to learn that this place is well below average in terms of its number of registered nurse and physical therapy hours provided to its patients based on the measures we assessed. Lastly, we assessed the percentage of residents that ultimately returned home from this nursing home. This nursing home did not fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 48.7 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was below the national average.
