Although we graded this place incredibly poorly overall, it actually received a very impressive government inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our better scores in that area with a B+. Perhaps the most important factor we consider in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. It is generally best to avoid nursing homes that have too many severe deficiencies. Although this place had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were serious based on CMS' scale. A few minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.

Turning to the area of long-term care, this nursing home was given just a D in that area. Unfortunately, this proved to be one of its better grades. For patients looking for a permanent place to live as opposed to rehabilitation, long-term care is a very important category. Once we looked at the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination records. We were optimistic to learn that this facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia. Finally, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this facility had 2.18 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, this figure is far less impressive than its vaccination record.

We also wanted to draw your attention to this facility's poor nursing grade where it received an F. The nursing rating analyzes several datapoints, but the paramount one is the number of nurse hours spent with patients. This nursing home averaged a meager 3.2 hours of nursing care per patient daily. On top of receiving below average marks for total nursing hours, this nursing home was a bit less impressive in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at in calculating our nursing scores. We looked at the percent of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and found that this facility was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in this metric.

Switching gears to our fourth area, this facility really didn't perform well in this category either. Due to a very poor grade of F in short-term care, this is really as terrible as it gets. In determining our short-term care scores, we analyze a nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This category is typically a meaningful assessment of a facility's rehabilitation. Given its abysmal rating in this area, we were not stunned to discover this nursing home offered significantly fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most facilities. The last metric we considered in this category is the percentage of residents that who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. This facility struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 39.2 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, this was quite a bit below the national average.
