Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

This nursing home received a strong overall grade as mentioned above, but we wanted to emphasize its excellent long-term care rating. We awarded them an impressive grade of A in this category. When nursing homes receive a grade in this range in long-term care it typically means it's well-staffed and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. After considering the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 99.2 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is far higher than the average nursing home. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A

Adding to its impressive profile, this facility also performed at a high level in the area of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless government inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our best grades in that area with a score of A. Our inspection ratings are tied to many items located in the a nursing home's recent government inspections. Places that score well in this category tend to have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these places generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. While this place had a few deficiencies on its report, none were severe based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

This facilities next best category was short-term care. We gave it a grade of B- in this category. This is basically a slightly below average grade in this area. In determining our short-term care ratings, we assess the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The goal is to devise a barometer for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not every nursing home employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, according to the data this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The last metric we considered in this area is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. We discovered that just 0 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is below average.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

The last category we rated was nursing. We gave this facility a C in this category. Nursing grades are primarily tied to the facility's level of nurse staffing. This place averages just 0.5 hours of nursing care per patient per day, which is well below average. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this place actually fared better in some of the quality measures we assessed. It performed well in the area of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. Many consider these areas to be good measures of the quality of nursing care. In some cases, the quality of nursing care is every bit as important as the quantity of hours of care provided.
