We want to point out that this facility really outperformed its overall score in the category of inspections. In fact, it received an excellent inspection report this year. As a result, we gave it one of our highest scores in that area with an A-. Inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these factors by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This facility was hit with 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe deficiencies. This means that the government inspectors didn't deem any of these deficiencies an immediate threat to patient health or safety. A couple of minor deficiencies should not lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.

This nursing home also received a strong nursing grade. In fact, we awarded it a grade of B in that category, which is one of our better scores. There are quite a few subcategories included in this area. Most of the factors reflect the quantity of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This facility performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can frequently be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

Moving on to the category of short-term care, this facility received just a D in that category. Our short-term care scores are important for people needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually mandates more skilled nursing. This includes a vast scope of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other types of therapy. With a score in this range for this category, we weren't surprised to learn that this nursing home was below average in many staffing figures we looked at. In fact, it offered significantly fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than most other facilities. The final datapoint we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 3.4 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these poor statistics doomed this facility's short-term care score.

The last area we analyzed is long-term care, which was this nursing home's least impressive area. We gave this nursing home a grade of D in that area. For long-term care residents, the primary goal is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. With only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home has less hospitalizations than many nursing homes. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.
