This facility's best category grade came in the area of inspections. In that category, we awarded this facility a grade of B+. It actually outperformed most nursing homes in this category. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining our inspection ratings. One critical factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies can be relatively minor. This place was hit with 10 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were considered to be severe. This tells you that CMS didn't deem any of these deficiencies to be an immediate risk to resident safety or health. A couple of minor deficiencies should not stop you from considering a nursing home.

One of the other reasons we rated this nursing home so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing grade. This proved to be its second best category grade. In that category, we gave this nursing home an B. The nursing rating consists of many components, most of which are tied to levels of nurse staffing. This facility provided 4.1 hours of nursing care per resident each day, which was above the national average. Lastly, this nursing home also performed even better in most of the quality-based metrics we looked at. By way of illustration, it had a low rate of residents experiencing both major falls and pressure ulcers. We consider these statistics to be reliable measures of the quality of nursing care.

Additionally, we also wanted to note that this nursing home was given strong long-term care marks in this assessment. We awarded them one of our more favorable scores in this category, with a B. Long-term care grades in this range generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. After we finished looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia tragically can be a life or death health condition for nursing home residents so we strongly prefer when a nursing home doesn't leave this to chance. The last statistic we assessed was the facility's hospitalization rate. We found that this nursing home had 3.94 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Although this wasn't as impressive as most of its other scores in this area, this figure may be skewed for some nursing homes due to the medical complexity of patients.

Turning to our last category, we gave this nursing home a D for short-term care. This is the nursing home's weakest category grade. In determining our short-term care scores, we look at the facility's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. This category is more often than not a fair measure of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. Not surprisingly based on its score in this category, this place was subpar in one of the two key staffing areas we looked at. The facility provided substantially fewer registered nurse hours per patient than most other facilities. Finally, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. This definitely was not a strength for this facility. We found that just 14.2 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most facilities, around half of their residents are able to return home so this is well below average.
